WSEE as standalone
I am looking to build a very basic home server on Windows Server 2022 or 2025.
This will replace a 10-year old Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 platform. My uses included:
- Basic file server with shared folders accessed by my home client PCs.
- Media file server with content accessed by various streaming devices on my home network. This is simply playing back MKV, ISO, FLAC, WAV, MP3 directly with no transcoding involved.
- Backing up my 5 PC client machines (using the Essentials connector functionality).
My understanding is that this use only requires the server OS license without any CALS.
Looking at your product offerings, I think all I need is WSEE but I don’t see a standalone purchase option. Based on my needs, I don’t believe I need the Work File or Remote App products.
Please advise on how I would accomplish this.

The WSEE Installer is only made available (at no additional charge) to purchasers of our software products. It is not made available as a stand-alone offering since we do not officially offer support for it, and since the components it installs are not ours to sell (i.e. they belong to Microsoft). Therefore, you will need to purchase a copy of WSE RemoteApp or WSE WorkFolders (even if you do not intend to ever use the add-in) in order to gain access to the WSEE Installer. Once you’ve made your purchase, you can contact us with the “User Name” from the license of your purchased product and request access to the WSEE Installer.
See here for my thoughts on CALs.
