Just a quick note to let everyone know that I have finished writing a new version of my WHS Quicken add-in for use with Windows Home Server 2011, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials. It’s a complete rewrite, from the ground up, of the WHS Quicken for WHS V1/2003 add-in that provides individual user-level access to Intuit’s Quicken application from your Windows Server Solutions server.

WHS Quicken 2011 can run a server-installed copy of Quicken from any computer just as if it were running directly on the local computer. Quicken runs in its own fully resizable window with its own entry in the taskbar. Its popup windows are redirected to the local desktop, its notification area icons (if any) appear in the local computer’s notification area, and the local computer’s drives and printers can be redirected to it; making a completely seamless “Quicken” experience for your end-users.

With WHS Quicken 2011, a single server-side installation of Quicken can be accessed by up to 10 users of your network (up to 25 when used with WSBS2011e or WSS2008R2e). Using the remote application capabilities of your server, WHS Quicken 2011 provides your users with full access to their very own instance of Quicken just as if it were running on their local computer. They’ll be able to manage their spending, stay on top of their personal finances, and stick to a budget from any Windows-based computer on your network, or from almost anywhere using your server’s built-in Remote Web Access website.

There’s a fully functional 21 day evaluation period available, so go and try it out for yourself. I’m more than sure that you will enjoy it as much as I do. And, as always, I welcome your comments and feedback.

  • Thanks so much for deciding to support the WHS 2011 platform with your WHS Quicken 2011 add-in.

When I was looking for a solution like TheOfficeMaven’s WHS Quicken add-in I was really hoping that you would eventually provide a new release for the latest Home Server edition. I’m glad you did.

It seems so simple but yet this add-in is just so awesome. We have upgraded our children from a hand-written deposit book for their pocket money to their very own password protected Quicken file. And of course we can still use our family files as before but now from anywhere we are in the world !!

The power and flexibilty this add-in provides is well worth the small investment of my money, without a doubt.

Many thanks also for your very prompt and easy to understand support.

  • Thanks for your wonderful comments Jason.

I’m really glad to hear that both you and your family are enjoying the WHS Quicken 2011 add-in.

BTW, my wife absolutely loves it too, and she probably deserves the most credit for there being a “2011” release. Once we switched over to using WHS 2011 as our primary home server, she was absolutely relentless with her inquiries as to when she would be able to access Quicken from the new server. Ha!

    Take care.

  • I’ve installed the trial and think this may be just what we need. One question–do both you and your wife access the same data file in Quicken on the server? If so, have you ever had an issue if both of you try to access at the same file at the same time? I’ve successfully set it up so that we can both open our shared Quicken data file on the server using WHS Quicken 2011 but I’m concerned about what might happen if we both login to the same file from different locations at the same time. Any experience or insight?

  • Hi Jim,

Glad to hear that WHS Quicken 2011 may be just what you need. As for your question…

Intuit’s Quicken application was not designed to allow simultaneous access to the same data file (in fact, I don’t think it will even allow you to do so – I presume that it would simply give an access violation error whenever the second user attempted to open the data file while it was already “in use” by another user). While both you and your wife can access the same data file, you can’t both do it at the exact same time. Note that this is not a limitation to my WHS Quicken 2011 add-in, but rather a limitation of the main Quicken application itself.

If you need multiple simultaneous access like that, then you would need to move up to using Intuit’s QuickBooks application instead (and run it in “multiple user mode” with multiple user licenses purchased directly from Intuit – along with my WHS QuickBooks 2011 add-in). QuickBooks was designed to allow shared access to its data (i.e. “company”) files whereas Quicken was not.

I hope that helps you out some, and thank you for your interest in my software.

  • Thanks for the clarification, Mike. What are you plans for your various software suites given the recent announcements about the future (or lack thereof) for WHS?

  • Hi Jim,

Despite its hefty price tag, Windows Server 2012 Essentials is an awesome replacement for Windows Home Server 2011, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials. I have been exploring the beta release, and I have to say that it will definitely be my next home server for sure. While I can’t say as I care too much for the (awful) Metro user interface, the server itself is totally amazing (even in its beta form). It took me over a year to move from WHS v1 to WHS 2011, but I’ll be jumping head first into WSE 2012 right out of the gate (as it really is that good).

Unfortunately, none of my current Windows Server Solutions 2011 add-ins (WHS Office 2011, WHS Outlook 2011, WHS QuickBooks 2011, or WHS Quicken 2011) work with Windows Server 2012 Essentials (they install just fine, but won’t run). However, I am currently hard at work on new versions of each of the add-ins for use with Windows Server 2012 Essentials. Keep an eye on my website as I’ll post the new add-ins here just as soon as they’re ready to go.

BTW, the new add-ins will be named WSE Office 2012, WSE Outlook 2012, WSE QuickBooks 2012, and WSE Quicken 2012. Upgrade pricing will be available to all of my current WSS 2011 add-in customers wishing to move up to the new Windows Server 2012 Essentials editions.

Thanks for your continued interest in my software.
