the latest Essentials updater seems to take a very long time

0

To install.

Started around 8:15am still going at 9:00am assigning permissions

Finally finished around 9:10am

Is there a way to let people know it will take a bit to install this time?

Setting the access permissions (on many hundreds of files) is unfortunately a time consuming process. I’m sure that there’s a faster way to do it, but at this late stage in the game, I don’t think I’m willing to spend the time to redo everything (and risk introducing bugs, etc.).

That being said… Unless you’re running on a server that is very underpowered, it shouldn’t be taking nearly that long to complete (i.e. almost an hour). On all of our test servers here, it takes around 10 minutes or less to run either the WSEE Updater or the WSEE Installer to completion (excluding the configuration wizard of course).

The permissions are being set using Microsoft’s icacls.exe and cacls.exe command-line tools (although using robocopy.exe would probably be a better/faster solution – or maybe even running multiple instances of icacls in parallel) and so you may want to investigate those programs on your server just to make sure that they’re running okay.

Thanks Mike. On this or any other server I have never seen the updater take longer than 20 minutes.

This just seemed weird and I thought I would let you know.

I have a bunch of others to update I will let you know if they have similar issues when I update them tonight.

Thanks for continuing to support the product. Much appreciated.

Sounds good. BTW, I just tested the latest release of the WSEE Updater on three more servers over here and things are running normally for me (time-wise). Additionally, just so you know, no changes were made in this area for any of the recent updates (i.e. no specific code changes in that area for well over a year now).
