General question about 2027/01/12 and consquences on WSEE
Hi Mike,
Sorry if my question may seem a little bit stupid, but I just want to make things clear. My question is about this mention written on your WSEE install tutorial page:
IMPORTANT NOTE: Support for Windows Server 2016, and hence for the Windows Server Essentials Experience and the WSEE Installer, ends on January 12, 2027.
Does that mean that we should eventually search for an alternative to WSEE? I understand that Microsoft will end feature support, but does that mean you will end it too? Since you are still providing updates for the WSEE role from time to time, does that mean that you will not be able to get the required ressources to provide those updates anymore?
Thank you in advance for the precisions :- )
P.S.: I really like WSEE and so, I really appreciate all the work you do to keep it alive.

Windows Server 2016 Essentials (and hence WSEE – since that’s the OS that it originally comes from) reaches end of support/end of life on January 12, 2027. Since Microsoft will no longer be updating Windows Server 2016 Essentials after that date, I assume that WSEE will no longer receive any updates after that as well.
In addition, since WSEE will no longer be a viable product after that date, I have decided to go ahead and retire at that time and so I will no longer be available after that, and I will be shutting down my website as well. Therefore, it probably would indeed be best to start searching for an alternative to WSEE before that time arrives (although, to the best of my knowledge, there still isn’t anything out there that compares to the feature set in WSEE – which is a real shame).
As for what’s going to happen to the WSEE Installer and/or my other software products after that date… I’m still deciding on that, but most likely I will be releasing “sunset” versions of them so that the folks who’ve paid for licenses can continue to use them after I (and my website) am no longer around. I’ll release further details on that decision as we draw a bit closer to January 12, 2027.
I hope that answers your question.

Yes, thank you for replying so fast. And I agree that this is truly a shame that nothing compares to the WSEE features after all those years… :- (

Hi all WSEE users,
the most important point for me is: Will the license check be “reconfigured” in the last package. At the moment I will use the WSEE after the EoS time, perhaps setup a new Server 2025 with it.
It would be very nice, if this will be possible, and no license check or transverse would be necessary.
Many thanks for the great work on WSEE!
Best regards
Lars

- At this point in time, I have no plans on removing the licensing checks from the “sunset” releases. My intention is to only allow those who actually purchased a license to be able to continue to use the software after I am gone (and not to give the work away for free to everyone). That being said… Now that Microsoft has announced three additional years of Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for Windows Server 2016 (Essentials), I’ll most likely be leaving my website up, and my software products for sale, for the time being but will no longer be offering any “official” support nor updates for them (as I slowly fade away into oblivion).

Hi Mike,
understand my in the right way: I don’t mean you should make all your work for “free” available! I only intend to avoid license activation issues for regular customers, even when support ends, or you decide to take the website down.
Best regards and thanks for the great work
