Connect from Linux

Client OS: Manjaro KDE

RDP program: Remmina

Server: Server 2016 Essentials

With the above I can RDP to the desktop of the server. I have downloaded the trial of WSE RemoteApp 2016 and it appears to be configured and working (from a Windows client).

I went to my remote access website and clicked the RemoteApp icon to download the .rdp file to the computer and imported it into the RDP client. When I try and connect it is unable to (generic error that it couldnt connect).

Ive tried:

  • Changing server name to IP
  • Changing username from <domain>\<username> to just <username>
    • and adding <domain> to domain field
  • Checked user permissions and they all show green checks and appear to be correct.
  • Altering the field in client for (albeit guessing at these):
    • Startup program
    • Startup path

So is this an issue with how the .rdp is generated? Is there some configuration I need to do in Windows firewall to allow this to connect?

Laptop is on the same subnet and IP range (x.x.x.y, x’s are same on server and laptop). Server is the DNS server for the laptop. Laptop can connect standard RDP session to server desktop.

Any help would be great and likely push me to purchase the software. If need be I may be able to include screenshots or more info at another time. Thanks

I’m not familiar with Linux as I don’t use it. However, the Remote Desktop Connection client you use needs to be able to support RemoteApp functionality and not just the normal Remote Desktop functionality. In Windows, Microsoft handles all of that for you via their native Remote Desktop Connection client (or via their Microsoft Remote Desktop UWP app on Windows 10). However, since I’m not familiar with Linux, I do not know if a Remote Desktop Connection client that supports RemoteApp is available for the platform (and preferably with RDP 8.0 or greater support as well).

That being said, instead of attempting to scavenge one of the .RDP files from WSE RemoteApp’s Remote Web Access connection, you are much better off attempting to locate a RemoteApp and Desktop Connections (RADC) client that works in Linux. That way, you’ll receive a properly formatted .RDP file directly from the add-in’s RADC web feed that will work as you intend it to (for more information see: Connecting From Mac/iOS/Android/Windows PC/Mobile Computers and Devices). Again though, I’m not sure if a RADC client is available for Linux or not. Sorry that I don’t have a better answer for you on this one.
